‘A lot of tripling:’ AdventHealth sees spike in COVID-19 cases during summer peak

ORLANDO, Florida. – Just in time for what is expected to be a record-breaking Fourth of July travel season, coronavirus infections are rising in Central Florida.

According to AdventHealth, the number of cases coming into Centra Care has increased significantly. Last month, the average was 250 cases per week. Last week alone, there were 750 cases.

“We’ve seen a threefold increase in COVID-19 cases,” said Dr. Timothy Hendrix, medical director of AdventHealth Centra Care. “This is most likely KP.3, the new variant, one of the Omicron variants that we’re seeing spreading.”

KP.3 and LB.1 are among several variants being tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While not necessarily summer-related, there are several factors that determine how it spreads, particularly holiday travel.

The summer surge in infections began after Memorial Day, which Hendrix said is a pattern of COVID-19 surges AdventHealth has seen in the past, usually involving travel and people gathering. There will likely be a surge after July 4.

Recent CDC data shows that COVID-19 infections are estimated to be increasing in 44 states and territories. The CDC recommends vaccination for everyone 6 months and older in the United States to prevent COVID-19. The new 2024-2025 vaccines are expected to be available in the fall of 2024.
