The Indian Army said on Wednesday that the family of Agniveer Ajay Kumar has been awarded Rs 98.39 lakh after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh “lied” about compensation given to the family of a soldier killed in the line of duty.

“Certain social media posts have suggested that no compensation has been paid to the bereaved family of Agniveer Ajay Kumar, who lost his life in the line of duty… Out of the total amount due, the family of Agniveer Ajay has already received Rs 98.39 lakhs,” the Army said in a statement.

The Army also clarified that compensation for a fallen hero will be paid besides the kin of deceased soldiers, including ‘Agniveers’. The Army’s clarification comes after Rahul Gandhi posted a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, in which he alleged that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was lying about the compensation given to the family of Agniveer Ajay Kumar. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also quoted the Army X message and wrote, “Indian Army is committed to the welfare of Agniveers!”

The video reportedly showed Ajay Kumar’s father saying that he had not received any compensation from the central government and that Rahul Gandhi had raised his voice in Parliament. Earlier on Monday, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, had said that the government considers the Agniveers as “use-and-throw workers” and does not label them as ‘shaheed’ (martyrs).
