Being a quarterback in a football-crazy city like Philadelphia comes with a lot of responsibilities off the field. First, you have to flatter us by saying something simple like “cheesesteaks are great” or “Braves really suck.” Second, you have to be aware that every move you make will be picked apart by the fans, especially in the summer downtime before training camp starts.

Regardless… Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts recently worked out with his younger teammates, according to his Instagram Story.

In this first photo, it looks like Hurts is working on some route concepts with rookies Johnny Wilson (6th round WR), Ainias Smith (5th round WR), and Will Shipley (4th round RB). While none of these guys are sure-fire final roster candidates, it’s great that they’re willing to work with the QB1 ahead of training camp to increase their chances.

All three bring different skill sets to the team that could help Hurts in September. Wilson is just shy of 6-foot-7, Smith scored touchdowns on the ground, through the air and via return at Texas A&M, and Shipley is a versatile running back whose brother plays lacrosse at Penn (local connection!).

I can’t say for sure who Hurts is talking to in the second photo, but it appears to be newly signed wideout Parris Campbell. Entering his sixth year in the NFL, five in Indianapolis and his final year with the New York Giants, Campbell is looking to fulfill the considerable promise he showed at Ohio State. I can’t say what Hurts is showing Campbell here (something with his footwork???), but in a crowded WR room in Philadelphia, getting any help from Hurts is certainly helpful.

Philadelphia is expected to begin training camp in late July, at which point we’ll see if Hurts’ extra practice sessions will benefit the young guys looking to make the team.
