A federal judge has Siemens AG and GlobalFoundries Inc.’s requests to invalidate two patents filed against it for techniques that improve the design and production of semiconductor chips because they involve abstract ideas.

The processes covered by U.S. Patent Nos. 7,685,545 and 8,266,571 to Oasis Tooling Inc. are abstract ideas that can be performed in the human brain and are therefore ineligible for patent, Judge Christopher J. Burke wrote in an opinion issued Tuesday by the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, granting both Siemens’ and GlobalFoundries’ motions for summary judgment.
