A motion to recommend traffic lights at three intersections in Warren has been rejected by the city’s traffic commission.

The intersections in question are Todd Avenue and Palmyra Road, Parkman Road, Denison Drive and Northwest Boulevard, and East Market Street and Country Club Drive.

All of these intersections have caused public outrage as they are considered dangerous.

However, that is not true, according to Councilman Greg Greathouse, who relies on data collected ten years before and three years after the traffic lights were removed.

The data shows that in the 10 years before the traffic lights at East Market Street and Country Club Drive were removed, there was an average of 2.4 accidents per year at that intersection.

Now, three and a half years after the traffic lights were removed, two accidents a year occur at this intersection.

At Tod Avenue and Palmyra, there were 36 accidents in the 10 years before the traffic lights were removed — an average of 3.6. After the lights were removed, the number of accidents dropped 0.3 percent to an annual average of 3.3.

For Parkman Road and Denison Drive/Northwest Boulevard, there were 17 accidents over the course of 10 years. In the last three and a half years, there have been only two, according to Greathouse data.

21 News pointed out to Greathouse that the data set for accidents before the lights were removed is much larger than the data collected after the lights were removed.

He said trends still indicate temperatures are lower than before the lights were removed.

Greathouse adds that the proposal for traffic lights at these intersections could still go ahead, but it is unclear how successful it will be.

21 News has reached out to Councilmember Tiffany Stanford, who introduced the motion, for comment on her next plans.
