A beloved Kendal knitting shop is to close after more than a decade in business.

The Kitten and the Goat in New Shambles Yard began 12 years ago with a mission to help beginners enjoy and develop their hobby.

Pandy Grenville-Evans, 64, owner of her shop, wrote on her shop’s website that she wanted to “bust myths, unravel techniques and translate jargon about the trade.”

To promote this, she created a YouTube channel called @kittenandgoat, where she offers practical, no-nonsense tips and tricks.

Because she suffers from chronic health problems herself, she wants to expand the channel to include lifestyle advice to help people who also struggle with chronic health problems.

Her physical store is described as ‘Aladdin’s treasure trove’, with a huge range of craft supplies and yarn, as well as fashionable dog accessories from The Posh Dog Company.

Customers will likely be familiar with her Pomeranian dog Eddie, as well as her partner, local cartoonist Robin Grenville Evans.

“It’s not a choice I would have made if I didn’t have to do it,” she said. “It’s a lot of things — but the state of the city just made it unfeasible

“I have been working here for just over 12 years now. I am now selling and clearing everything at reduced prices – all stock and also the equipment – storage – display and shop items.

“Today I have all the utilities taken care of and I am wrapping up the week ending August 3rd.

“I will continue to keep the YouTube channel and the monthly email with the free patterns.

“The website will continue to exist for a while, with my own patterns and items.

“We will now have to wait and see where the world takes us.”
