‘A song that is not my best’

But even as the country seemed to be overjoyed after the song won international awards, composer Keeravaani has always maintained a level-headed attitude towards it. He even went to the extent of not calling the song his ‘best’ work.

In a conversation with Indian Express, when asked if he felt that he was getting the recognition he deserved late, he replied, “Look, late or early, the global recognition has come for a song which is not my best. I can say that. But if the recognition has to come, it will come somehow, from whatever quarter. But late? Sometimes you feel it is late because your lifespan is fixed, that’s what it’s called late or early, if your lifespan is not fixed, it will come when it has to come.”

“I wasn’t even excited”

After returning to India following the Oscar win, Keeravaani admitted that he wasn’t even “excited” about the song winning Best Original Song. He credited the late Ramoji Rao for giving him the drive to make it happen.

He said at an event, “I was not initially excited about the Oscar nomination. But when I met Ramoji Rao, he told me to take the award home. I thought, if he attaches so much importance to the Oscars, then I should win it. I felt then that the award had value and was nervous even a few seconds before they announced the award. Not for me, not for him.”

Upcoming work

Keeravaani, who is credited as MM Kreem in Hindi, has composed the music for Ajay Devgn, Tabu-starrer Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha and is working on Anupam Kher-starrer Tanvi The Great.
